Fresh publication, earlier economic period
The ECB’s sector-accounts release dated 28 October provides new information about the second quarter of 2026. Euro area net saving totalled EUR 868 billion over the four quarters to Q2, compared with EUR 895 billion over the four quarters to Q1. Annual growth in non-financial corporations’ financing was 1.7% in Q2, after 1.4% in Q1.
These measures describe different things. Saving is measured over four quarters; the financing figure is an annual growth measure. Today’s second release also incorporates revisions and more complete sector information. Its publication date does not turn the underlying reference period into current October activity.
Our editorial interpretation is cautious: financing and saving add economic context, but neither number establishes an immediate EUR/USD direction. A statement about the exchange rate would also require evidence about the dollar and verified current prices. No such price response is claimed here.
The policy clock still matters
The Federal Reserve’s October calendar schedules the FOMC announcement for 19:00 CET today, followed by its press conference at 19:30 CET. These correspond to 14:00 and 14:30 in Washington, which remains on daylight time while Copenhagen is on standard time. The decision is still ahead of this assessment.
The FOMC meeting calendar lists the meeting on 27 and 28 October. A meeting date is not itself an interest-rate result. We have not verified today’s statement, implementation note or press-conference guidance, and make no claim about their future content or a market consensus.
The ECB diary places its policy decision tomorrow, 29 October at 14:15 CET, with the conference at 14:45 CET. The two decisions therefore arrive sequentially. A view formed after the Fed could still change when the ECB provides its own evidence.
Main scenario and alternatives
Main scenario: neutral until the Fed announcement, with neither currency favoured. Without fresh timestamped quotes, this is a macro and calendar assessment. It contains no exchange-rate target and does not assert that prices are flat or that volatility is low.
Down alternative: subsequently verified Fed guidance that points to firmer US policy relative to the ECB could strengthen USD against EUR and move EUR/USD lower. Up alternative: softer relative Fed guidance could strengthen EUR against USD and support EUR/USD. These are conditional interpretations, not predictions of tonight’s decision.
The trigger for reassessment is the actual policy communication. Its rate decision, implementation details, explanation and later questions may need to be read together. Revisions to the European data can also change the context. No probability is assigned to either alternative, and a directional market reaction should only be described once its quote source, timestamp and delay have been verified.
Reading the next release
The useful distinction this afternoon is between an economic publication we can already read and policy decisions we cannot yet know. The sector accounts provide historical context. The scheduled announcement can supply new guidance. Neither should be used as a substitute for the other, and this dated pre-decision assessment is not an account of what happens after 19:00 CET.
