Check the clock before the calendar

A release time can appear to move even when the statistical agency has changed nothing. Europe and the United States end daylight saving on different dates. That matters when an international reader saves a US event using the Copenhagen times shown in our commentary. It is a calendar issue, not evidence that either currency has strengthened.

Forex is currently in its normal weekend pause. Our Forex Market Hours guide uses the weekly convention of Sunday at 17:00 in New York. Tonight, 18 October, that corresponds to 23:00 CEST. This is an indicative reopening reference. Broker schedules, instrument availability and liquidity can differ.

Two clock changes, one temporary difference

The European Commission’s summertime guidance states that EU countries return to standard time on the last Sunday of October. In 2026 that is 25 October. The proposal to discontinue seasonal changes has not taken legal effect; it should not be treated as an implemented calendar rule.

NIST’s current US guidance gives 1 November as the end of daylight saving in 2026. For New York, the change therefore comes one week after Copenhagen’s. Readers elsewhere should check their own time zone rather than assume either convention applies locally.

During the coming working week, 19 to 23 October, Copenhagen remains six hours ahead of US Eastern time. In the working week of 26 to 30 October, the difference is five hours. The agency’s declared Eastern release time remains the anchor. Copying a familiar Copenhagen time from a previous week can produce a one-hour error.

Two scheduled examples

The BLS October calendar lists Usual Weekly Earnings of Wage and Salary Workers for the third quarter of 2026 on Wednesday, 21 October at 10:00 EDT, or 16:00 CEST. It is a future quarterly earnings publication. It is not the monthly jobs report, and this outlook assumes no result.

The same calendar schedules the third-quarter Employment Cost Index on Friday, 30 October at 08:30 EDT, or 13:30 CET. By then Copenhagen will have changed its clocks and New York will not. The two examples use different European abbreviations deliberately. Their reference periods are both quarterly; their publication dates and measures are different.

The Federal Reserve’s October calendar also lists the next two-day FOMC meeting for 27 and 28 October. Those are scheduled dates, not a policy outcome. These are selected checkpoints to illustrate calendar preparation, not a complete event list.

What this means for EUR/USD

Changing the clock does not change the underlying economic evidence. Our editorial interpretation remains conditional on the relative outlook for Fed and ECB policy. A wage or compensation release can inform that comparison, but its publication time and its headline alone do not establish a currency response.

Main scenario: neutral for tonight’s reopening and Monday preparation, with neither currency favoured. No fresh verified EUR/USD quote, numerical exchange-rate forecast, opening gap or live price reaction is assumed.

Down alternative: official evidence or guidance supporting firmer Fed expectations relative to the ECB could strengthen USD against EUR and pressure EUR/USD lower. Up alternative: firmer relative ECB expectations or softer US guidance could strengthen EUR against USD and support EUR/USD.

New official guidance, material revisions or a changed relative activity and inflation picture would prompt a reassessment. First verify what has actually been released. Then separate the reported result from the interpretation. These uncertain scenarios provide context, not an instruction to place an order.

Sources, interests and risk

Linked official calendars, time guidance, our session guide and the HFM destination were checked on 18 October by the assessment time above. No fresh verified FX quote is used. The affiliate commission relationship does not determine the editorial assessment.
