Producer prices are a different window
Yesterday’s consumer-price report, the newly published Beige Book and today’s producer-price calendar describe different pieces of the US economy. Their dates and coverage matter as much as their headlines. Our focus is whether the next evidence broadens the inflation picture, while keeping the euro side of the comparison in view.
The BLS September CPI release, published on 14 October, showed a 0.6% seasonally adjusted monthly increase and a 3.7% annual increase before seasonal adjustment. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month and 2.6% over the year. Gasoline accounted for more than half of the monthly headline increase. These are published consumer-price results, not today’s PPI figures.
What the Beige Book adds
The Fed’s October Beige Book national summary is now available, dated 14 October. It describes limited overall consumer-spending growth and broadly little change in labour-market conditions, alongside continuing price pressure. Eight Districts characterised price growth as moderate, three as robust and one as modest. Higher oil prices appeared across the District reports; contacts also discussed squeezed margins and resistance to price increases.
The report was prepared from information collected on or before 5 October. It therefore cannot be a response to yesterday’s CPI publication. It summarises outside contacts’ observations, not Fed officials’ policy views. Our editorial reading is that cost pressure and restrained demand can coexist. The report adds context, rather than a policy decision or a verified dollar reaction.
Today’s release is still ahead
The BLS calendar schedules September PPI for today at 14:30 CEST, equivalent to 08:30 EDT. Copenhagen is six hours ahead of US Eastern time on this date. At this morning’s cutoff, September’s result remains unpublished; the current PPI summary still covers August. No consensus or September outcome is assumed.
The BLS PPI overview explains that producer indexes measure selling prices received by domestic producers. CPI approaches prices from the purchaser’s perspective. Taxes, subsidies and distribution costs can make those perspectives differ. PPI also distinguishes final demand from intermediate demand and separates goods from services.
When the release arrives, compare the headline with its components and identify the precise exclusion measure used. An energy-led rise and broad services pressure would tell different stories. Neither automatically translates one for one into future consumer inflation. The useful question is how the detail changes the assessment of persistent pressure, rather than whether it repeats yesterday’s number.
Keep the European comparison
In 13 October remarks, Philip Lane discussed higher global long-term rates associated with the AI investment boom and their tightening effect on euro-area financial conditions. He said this matters for the appropriate policy stance. This remains dated ECB context, not a new rate vote today. Relative Fed and ECB expectations matter for our scenarios; a US release alone does not settle that comparison.
Scenarios for 15 October
Main scenario: neutral for today’s European and US sessions, with neither currency favoured. We have not verified a fresh EUR/USD quote carrying an instrument timestamp and quantified delay, so this is a macro and calendar assessment without a numerical exchange-rate forecast.
Down alternative: broader US price persistence in the released detail, if it supports firmer Fed expectations relative to the ECB, could strengthen USD, weaken EUR and pressure EUR/USD lower. Up alternative: softer US price evidence or firmer relative ECB guidance could strengthen EUR against USD and support EUR/USD.
Material revisions, the breadth of the released components or new official guidance could change the assessment. Mixed evidence would support continued caution. These scenarios are uncertain and do not describe an observed price response or prescribe a trade.
