Before the balance-of-payments release

Today’s euro-area checkpoint is the ECB’s monthly balance of payments. The official release calendar schedules the August 2026 data for 20 October. At this morning’s assessment, we treat that publication as upcoming and assume no result. The useful preparation is to identify which balance a headline actually describes.

A goods-trade deficit and a current-account balance answer different questions. Reading them as interchangeable could produce a misleading euro narrative before the full release is available. Our assessment stays neutral while the broader external picture and any subsequent official guidance remain to be evaluated.

Goods are only part of the picture

The ECB’s statistical explanation says the current account includes goods, services, primary income and secondary income. The financial account records a different set of transactions. The monthly current-account components are seasonally adjusted.

Friday’s Eurostat release dated 16 October already reported an August goods deficit. Its seasonally adjusted balance was a EUR 6.8 billion deficit, following July’s EUR 1.4 billion surplus. These provisional observations concern goods. They do not tell us today’s complete current-account result.

When the ECB release becomes available, compare like periods and adjustment bases, then look at the components and any revisions. A change concentrated in goods may have a different economic explanation from a change driven by services or income. This is a framework for interpreting the publication, not a forecast of an unpublished number.

The policy context remains mixed

The separate inflation release published on 16 October put euro-area annual HICP inflation at 3.8% in September, up from 3.2% in August. That is a different reference month and measure. Our interpretation is that external weakness and inflation pressure should both inform the discussion of ECB expectations. Neither statistic by itself establishes the next policy decision.

The Fed calendar still lists the FOMC meeting for 27 and 28 October. Today’s BLS State Employment and Unemployment release is scheduled for 16:00 CEST (10:00 EDT), covering September. It is state-level evidence, not a new national payroll report. Tomorrow’s quarterly Usual Weekly Earnings release is also scheduled for 16:00 CEST.

A new release date is not a live quote

The Fed’s H.10 page now carries a 19 October release date, with observations for the week of 12 to 16 October. This is a newly available historical statistical release compared with yesterday morning. It does not provide a fresh Tuesday instrument quote. We therefore use no numerical exchange-rate forecast, target or claim about the overnight move.

Our Forex Market Hours guide describes the normal weekday convention. The trading week is underway, but a scheduled regional session does not verify liquidity or a particular broker’s instrument availability. Broker hours and breaks can differ.

Conditional EUR/USD scenarios for today

Main scenario: neutral through today’s European and US sessions, with neither currency favoured. Assess the broader external release alongside the inflation and relative monetary-policy context before adopting a directional view.

Up alternative: a more resilient external picture, supported across relevant components and accompanied by firmer ECB expectations relative to the Fed, could strengthen EUR against USD and support EUR/USD.

Down alternative: broader external deterioration combined with firmer relative Fed expectations could strengthen USD against EUR and pressure EUR/USD lower. A single balance headline would not be sufficient to establish either scenario.

Material revisions, a changed inflation picture or new official policy guidance would change this assessment. A verified currency response would add separate evidence. No consensus comparison, release surprise or market reaction is assumed here. Both alternatives remain uncertain.
