Prices first, then pay after prices

Today brings two related US releases that answer different questions. The Consumer Price Index measures consumer-price changes. Real Earnings examines pay after adjusting for inflation. Reading them as two independent inflation signals can obscure what actually changed.

The BLS October calendar schedules both September releases for 14 October at 14:30 CEST. Its 08:30 Eastern time is EDT; Copenhagen remains on CEST, six hours ahead. At this morning’s assessment, these are future publications. No September result, consensus surprise or currency reaction is asserted here.

Separate the price measures

The BLS CPI explanation distinguishes the all-items index from the measure excluding food and energy, commonly used to examine underlying inflation. Monthly and annual changes also describe different comparisons. Once the release arrives, check which measure and comparison period each headline uses.

Our editorial reading will consider whether the details indicate persistent price pressure or easing, rather than turn one headline into a guaranteed dollar response. A change concentrated in volatile categories can convey different information from broader pressure. This is a framework for reading the future release, not a claim about today’s unpublished components.

Real earnings are not nominal wage acceleration

The BLS Real Earnings technical note explains that earnings come from the establishment survey. CPI-U deflates the all-employee series; CPI-W deflates the production and nonsupervisory series. Average weekly earnings also reflect average weekly hours.

Consequently, real earnings can improve because prices rise more slowly, even without faster nominal wage growth. Weekly and hourly changes may differ when hours change. The averages can also shift with the mix of jobs across industries, so they do not describe every worker’s experience. Our interpretation will separate the pay, hours and price contributions before connecting the figures to household purchasing power or policy expectations.

Fresh European context, dated US guidance

In remarks published on 13 October, ECB Executive Board member Philip Lane discussed the AI investment boom and its possible contribution to higher global long-term interest rates. He described the spillover into euro-area bond markets as a material tightening of financial conditions, relevant to the appropriate policy stance. These remarks are now available, but they are not a new ECB rate decision or a verified EUR/USD price move.

On the US side, Christopher Waller’s 8 October speech described stable employment and inflation that remained too high. Further increases were conditional on incoming data, with flexible timing. That is his dated published view. It does not establish the FOMC’s response to numbers still due today.

The Fed calendar also schedules the Beige Book for today at 20:00 CEST (14:00 EDT). Its conclusions remain unavailable at this cutoff. The later publication may add context after the BLS releases.

Scenarios for 14 October

Main scenario: neutral through today’s European and US sessions. Neither currency is favoured because no fresh EUR/USD quote with an instrument timestamp and quantified delay has been verified. This is a macro and calendar assessment, with no numerical exchange-rate forecast.

Down alternative: new evidence of persistent US inflation that supports firmer Fed expectations relative to the ECB could strengthen USD, weaken EUR and put downward pressure on EUR/USD. Up alternative: softer US inflation evidence or firmer relative ECB expectations could strengthen EUR against USD and support EUR/USD.

The assessment changes if the released details, meaningful revisions or official communication materially alter the relative policy picture. Mixed evidence would support continued caution. These conditional scenarios are uncertain; they do not assert current market pricing or prescribe a trade.
